Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess'
Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' is a large dark-stemmed Alocasia with broad green leaves and a tall upright shape. Mature plants produce thick petioles that lift the blades well above the pot.
The leaves are broad, slightly puckered and carried on deep purple to near-black petioles. In a bright warm position, the plant can become a substantial container specimen, so it needs space around the pot and enough root room to carry its leaf mass.
Dark stems and broad leaves
- Petioles: Dark purple to blackish stems create strong contrast below the green blades.
- Leaves: Broad green elephant-ear foliage with a slightly textured surface.
- Scale: Can become large indoors with warmth, feeding and stable watering.
- Placement: Suitable for a floor pot, conservatory or sheltered summer position after acclimation.
Yucatan Princess in home conditions
Large Alocasia leaves need a root system that can take up water and oxygen at the same time. Use a stable pot, a coarse fertile mix and a warm position, then adjust watering as the plant moves between active summer growth and slower indoor winter growth.
- Light: Gentle grow-light exposure helps petioles stay firm and leaves size up. Gentle early sun can suit acclimated plants.
- Watering: Water deeply once the upper few centimetres of substrate begin to dry. Large active leaves can increase water demand quickly.
- Substrate: Use bark, coco chips, pumice or perlite with a moisture-retentive fraction for even hydration.
- Pot choice: Choose a heavy pot with enough depth for the root ball and enough stability for tall petioles.
- Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 20–30 °C during growth, and bring outdoor plants inside before cold nights.
- Humidity: Humid but ventilated air helps broad leaves expand cleanly.
- Feeding: Feed at moderate strength while new leaves are forming. Larger plants respond well to consistent nutrition.
- Pruning: Remove spent lower leaves close to the base with clean tools.
Dark-stem growth during setbacks
- Leaning stems: Rotate the pot and check whether the plant is reaching toward light.
- Yellowing lower leaves: Review root health, low light and seasonal slowdown.
- Brown edges: Balance humidity, watering volume and fertiliser strength.
- Leaf tears: Give the plant space and protect soft new leaves from repeated contact.
Handling larger dark-stem foliage
Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' is toxic if chewed. Keep it away from pets and children, and handle cut stems carefully.
Yucatan Princess background
The name Alocasia places the genus in relation to Colocasia, a closely allied aroid genus. Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' develops deep purple to blackish petioles beneath broad green leaves, with a tall upright habit as it matures.
